알렉스 카츠는 뉴욕 브루클린 태생으로 뉴욕 소재의 쿠퍼 유니온 아트스쿨에서 미술을 공부했다.
1954년 로고 갤러리에서 첫 개인전을 열고 화가, 시인, 디자이너, 사진작가 등 다양한 문화, 패션계의 인물들과 친분을 쌓아갔다. 그는 자신의 주변 인물을 주로 그리면서 가장 미국적인 팝아트 작가로 불리운다.
카츠의 작품은 단순하고 과감한 화면 구성과 채색을 특징으로 한다. 개성적 인물화에 자주 등장하는 아내 아다Ada는 풍부한 색채 속에도 절제된 분위기를 보여준다. 화면을 분할하고 클로즈업하는 기법이 특징적이다. 1950년대 콜라주 기법을 사용한 풍경화를 시작으로, 1960년 이후 영화, TV, 광고 등에서 영향을 받은 그만의 독특한 트리밍 구도가 사용되기 시작했다.
